-
- So what is a Mobile Map?
- ------------------------
-
- The MOBILE MAP DEMONSTRATION puts you in control of a fully
- interactive, 3D virtual reality map. Natural features -
- mountains, valleys, lakes, and oceans - can all be moved around
- with remarkable speed and flexibility. The map includes
- interactive names, Cartesian co-ordinates, a graphical compass,
- and navigational aids such as 'waypoints', 'route markers', and
- important 'features' of the real world.
-
-
-
- It demonstrates two products from HIGH COUNTRY SOFTWARE:
-
-
-
- 1. MOBILE MAP VIEWER version 1.00
-
- 2. A demonstration Mobile Map pre-loaded into the VIEWER.
-
-
-
- The demonstration does not offer input and output of other
- Mobile Maps, map creation facilities, or the full 360 degree
- flight mode, all of which are included with the MOBILE MAP
- VIEWER.
-
-
-
- That sounds like it needs a hefty Pentium, will it run on my
- machine?
- ------------------------------------------------------------
-
- The answer is almost certainly yes, due to some remarkable
- programming innovations. Mobile Maps run on cranky old B&W
- 386-SX 16 Laptops, so your machine is likely to work. As long
- as you have 550K RAM free lower memory, you should not have a
- memory problem, because the program doesn't need any more than
- 550K RAM in total! Mobile Maps run in MS-DOS and will work in
- Win3.1 or Win95.
-
-
-
- OK, How do I get to see it?
- ---------------------------
-
- The quickest way to see it is to get to the C:\ prompt, type
- MOBILE and press Return.
-
- If you are in Win95 or Win3.1 then you should make your way to
- an MS-DOS prompt in full screen mode.
-
-
-
- It says I don't have enough memory, and refuses to work!
- --------------------------------------------------------
-
- If the demo does not run, and instead reports that your machine
- has insufficient lower memory, then the most straight-forward
- way to make it work is to put a new 3.5' floppy disk into your
- computer and run the program INSTAL35 from the C: prompt.
-
-
-
- This will create a "Boot disk" with the MOBILE MAP DEMONSTRATION
- on the same disk. All you need to do now is restart your
- computer with the Boot disk in your floppy disk drive, and the
- MOBILE MAP DEMONSTRATION should boot-up and run automatically.
-
-
-
- It works, it's cool, but why do I need it?
- ------------------------------------------
-
- If you've ever looked at a map and wished you knew what the
- ground _really_ looked like, then Mobile Maps are for you. If,
- on the other hand, you can visualise what a birds nest of
- different coloured contours looks like in real life, you have no
- need for Mobile Maps (and should make a comfortable living from
- professional chess).
-
- Even if you don't get lost on hikes, field trips, or country
- drives you might like a quick heli-tour of Mt Everest, a stroll
- along a paradise island in the Bahamas, a sight of the
- battleground at Hastings, crossing the Alps in the footsteps of
- Hannibal, picking a ski-resort or golf course you like, or
- investigating the site of the latest world news.
-
- Professionals may already see uses for Mobile Maps: civil and
- environmental engineers, prospectors, GIS users, local
- government planners, search and rescuers, forest fire-fighters,
- farmers, and field scientists could all benefit from a mobile
- view of the world.
-
-
-
- So how do I get a Mobile Map?
- -----------------------------
-
- First of all you will need the MOBILE MAP VIEWER from HIGH
- COUNTRY SOFTWARE which can be ordered from the Sales Department,
- High Country Software, 22 Wycombe Gardens, Golders Green,
- London, NW11 8AL, United Kingdom. Or telephone:
- +44(0)181-731-6360. The price is รบ50, $70, DM 120 respectively.
- In Europe add 17.5% VAT sales tax; outside Europe add 5% for
- Postage and Packaging.
-
-
-
- Next, you will need to find, buy, or create the Mobile Map of
- the place you are interested in.
-
- If you cannot find or buy the required Mobile Map on the
- internet (try http:\\www.mobilemaps.com) or in a shop, then you
- will have to create the map yourself with an editor.
-
-
-
- A free BASIC MOBILE MAP EDITOR comes with the MOBILE MAP VIEWER
- for the creation of Mobile Maps. For accurate maps, a digital
- array of heights, and other terrain type information are needed,
- which are usually freely available for the U.S.A from the USGS,
- but are typically charged in Europe by such organisations as the
- Ordnance Survey of the United Kingdom. Map data can be obtained
- worldwide from Satellite Photography or Aerial Photo companies
- at typically higher prices. Some GIS consultants may be able to
- scan paper topographic contour maps to obtain the relevant data.
- The cheapest and least accurate method is to draw the maps free
- hand with the interactive component of the BASIC MOBILE MAP
- EDITOR.
-
-
-
- A PROFESSIONAL MOBILE MAP EDITOR is in development and should be
- available before the end of 1996. This will make the map
- creation task more accessible, and allow the full functionality
- of Mobile Maps to be implemented.
-
-
-
- An alternative to creating the map yourself is to hire a
- professional consultant to do the job for you. HIGH COUNTRY
- SOFTWARE provides a consultancy service for map creation, and is
- prepared to customise MOBILE MAP VIEWERs to provide a unique
- graphical presentation for special publications.
-
-
-
- ------------------------------
-
- The MOBILE MAPS concept was created & implemented by two New
- Zealand brothers, Peter and Philip Abrahamson of HIGH COUNTRY
- SOFTWARE, 22 Wycombe Gardens, Golders Green, London, NW11 8AL,
- United Kingdom. http://www.mobilemaps.com
-
-
-
- Peter Abrahamson has been responsible for graphics R&D, design
- and programming. Philip has managed the business, concept R&D,
- and added a dash of engineering.
